(Mount & Blade). (Memes & Stuff). (News Articles).Interesting Subreddits. The most pivotal and important event of the Mod's early game is easily the Second American Civil War. It's supposed to be a fun, epic event that turns what is potentially the most powerful nation in the game into an ideological wildcard. The problem arrives with the fact that it definitely isn't that right now. The 2nd ACW has the potential to be great, but it currently has a lot of issues right now that are holding it back from its potential. These involve both problems in lore/story and problems in balance/gameplay.
These problems are directly tied together, compounding one another.Problems in Lore and StoryNow, to be fair, the idea of a Second American Civil War in the 1930s already requires a good deal of suspension of disbelief, even if we account for the differences from our time line (OTL). I accept that, but at the same time, that shouldn't mean granting the story a blank check to do whatever it wants, no matter how ridiculous or unlikely.Let's start with what is, in my opinion, the most egregious example: The Pacific States of America. So, apparently, the Pacific states see the chaos in the East and decide to secede, not wanting to deal with that mess. That's somewhat believable, though still a little weak due to the PSA seemingly lacking both any serious ideological differences from the USA and a pre-existing separatist movement. The problem is that, nine times out of ten, the PSA secedes to 'get out of the mess', and then immediately jumps right back in by declaring war on the USA. I don't think I need to explain how ridiculous this is. Now, to be fair, this might be because the USA tries to reintegrate them, but in that case, they should still be far more likely to cave in.
After all, what are the Pacific troops fighting for? There is no serious ideological difference with the USA, and there doesn't appear to be a strong Californian nationalist sentiment either.Next is the topic of the CSA.
This faction is actually very logical from a lore standpoint: the rise of syndicalism worldwide and the plight of the Depression leading to radicalization of the urban poor makes sense. However, the problem is that the CSA starts with huge swathes of the rural Midwest as well. This would make sense if the people of those regions were feudal serfs, but most of them were (in OTL, and we have no reason to believe it's different here) independent, if lower-class, farmers. Independent farmers of all stripes have historically been strong opponents of revolutionary socialism, so this seems rather egregious.Last, we have Mexico. Mexico invading a disorganized America to regain lost territory is a decent concept, but very flawed in game.
First off, Mexico often only has to fight the USA- apparently, the CSA and, even more egregiously, the AUS passively accept letting Mexico take a fourth of the country for at least the time being. Considering how often Huey Long plows into Texas straight into the Mexican advance, this is even more silly. Mexico is also suffering from its own internal problems and, frankly, should be a lot less likely to attack in general.Balance/Gameplay IssuesAll of these lore issues directly feed into the much more frustrating problem, which is the severe lack of balance in the 2nd ACW right now. The ACW is supposed to make America a wild card, but this is clearly not the case.Basically, without player intervention, the CSA wins 90% of the time. This is frequently justified (mainly by fans of the CSA) by saying 'well, they are sitting on the most industrialized part of the country!' , but that doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny.
First off, even with this advantage, the strength of the CSA is still exaggerated by the aforementioned inexplicable control of vast swathes of the conservative Midwest, as well as Canada's frequent reluctance to directly intervene even when their victory (which would be disastrous for Canada) seems imminent. The USA wins the other 10% of the time. When they do win, it's because the AI gets really lucky with the RNG, resulting in either the West coast staying in the Union or the Canadians directly intervening. Most of the time, the USA gets smushed between the AUS and CSA, losing a bunch of divisions to encirclement in the Appalachians and the DC area. The simultaneous invasions of Mexico and the PSA destroy any small chance of regrouping in the West. The AUS, in my experience, never wins unless the player directly intervenes. They only succeed in weakening the USA before getting steamrolled by the CSA.
This is logical due to their comparative lack of both industry and manpower, but still bad for balance. Some Solution ProposalsMake the PSA more likely to stay in the Union and the Mexicans less likely to invade. This would greatly strengthen the USA and help give them a fighting chance, and it would also be better fitting for the current state of the lore. As for the CSA, it either needs to be explained how they got the support of the rural Midwest, or they should not have that support. The CSA is frankly severely overpowered right now and does not need buffs. The AUS should probably be a bit weaker than the USA and the CSA, but it should still have some sort of chance.
This could be done through buffs representing the 'good ole' southern fighting spirit' as well as increased foreign support. Maybe Huey Long can also pull some stunt to win the support of Southern Blacks, at the risk of angering the white nationalists.Expanding the role of foreign powers would be both fitting to the lore and could help balance if done correctly.
This is a civil war for control over one of the Great Powers, something the entire rest of the world should take great interest in. This is kind of shown in game, but is not nearly at the scale that it could be. Many more countries could have the option to get involved or scale up their involvement. In addition, I would suggest shortening national focus times in general. They're simply not much use to any faction when you're being bulldozed already, and the length of time they take makes that scenario more likely. The purpose of this post isn't to rag on the developers for not balancing things properly.
Us Civil War Causes
I really admire the massive amounts of work put into the 2nd ACW and the Mod as whole. However, there is a lot of constructive criticism that can be offered. We all want the mod to be the best it can, and I feel that having such glaring issues in such a key part of it can drag down the experience. Close the Tennessee/Kentucky gap between AUS and CSA. This means Washington (and Maryland) starts as the pocket it always is, so spawn the vast majority of the American forces out in the midwest. Give the Federalists a decision to move the wartime capital to it's usual spot in Denver.Bring AUS/CSA/FED initial resources closer in line with each other, and, more importantly, make sure they have similar buildup potential. One of the things I remember hearing about the CSA's inevitable victory is how their buildup potential is better.Spawn civil war forces by state, rather than all at the capital.
Spawn them at the start of the war, so the initial borders will be quickly manned. In the current update the biggest problem is with opened spaces in front lines, which allow for CSA and AUS to steamroll into federal lands. Giving factions more time before the war but giving the troops immediately good potentially solve it.Mexico should really be allowed to intervene only if they progress far enough into their political focus tree - past the 'what is happening' part and when it is clear that the current government is there to stay.Personally, I think PSA shouldn't even have the option to declare the war.
Feds should have, but shouldn't take the option often enough, instead allowing for PSA to stay alive. The opened space in frontlines problem is inherently a matter of ## divisions vs ## provinces frontage. If you've got more provinces than divisions then somewhere there's gonna be a hole, the only question is where.America is very, very big.this can be fixed by spawning a lot more volunteer divisions. The volunteers are universally awful, only good for holding territory and even then only because infantry is made of defense, so it probably won't throw the offensive part of the war into question.
Basically, without player intervention, the CSA wins 90% of the time. Also presumably most of those factory workers are currently fighting. The dumbest current option that comes out of the PSA split is them leaving, but then joining your faction and declaring war on the CSA and AUS.
They lost their sole reason for leaving, but for some reason still do not rejoin. I guess they built up a national sense of identity in the 3 days they'd be separate for. What worse is that this only seems to happen with MacArthur at the helm. So the only person able to convince the PSA to wage war against the other factions is the pseudodictator. That's just bonkers to me. The closest example for this we have is the Russian Civil War, and in that case, both the Reds and the Whites made use of conscripted peasants that amounted to little more than armed mobs. The Reds managed to pull out the win in large part due to Trotsky's ability to terrorize his soldiers into fighting better than the Whites could terrorize their troops. As for the effects of professionalism, the Czeckoslovak Legion ran roughshod over the Reds during the civil war; the battle-hardened Czechs occupied the entire Trans-Siberian Railway and held it, despite being surrounded by the Reds and under constant attack. The CSA should be absolute trash at fighting in the field, and their offensives should fall apart quickly when faced with actual resistance.
That's not to say they couldn't eventually win, but the brutality necessary would definitely require shake-ups in the system. The CSA should be absolute trash at fighting in the field, and their offensives should fall apart quickly when faced with actual resistance.
That's not to say they couldn't eventually win, but the brutality necessary would definitely require shake-ups in the system. This is actually reflected in-game. The CSA starts with a significant debuff to ORG and planning, as well as an army made almost entirely of militia, whereas the other combatants all field real infantry in addition to their militia. Until the CSA can reform its military, its divisions are weaker, harder to organize into proper offensives, and will give up on their attacks or cede their positions before their opposition.Their main ways around this are to reform into a professional army or to arm enough militia to carry out continuous offensives that can overcome the ORG penalty by constantly shifting fresh forces to the front until their enemy de-ORGs.
Fought 1861-1865, the American Civil War was the result of decades of sectional tensions between the North and South. Focused on slavery and states rights, these issues came to a head following the election of in 1860. Over the next several months eleven southern states seceded and formed the Confederate States of America. During the first two years of the war, Southern troops won numerous victories but saw their fortunes turn after losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863.
From then on, Northern forces worked to conqueror the South, forcing them to surrender in April 1865. The roots of the Civil War can be traced to increasing differences between North and South and their growing divergence as the 19th century progressed.
Chief among the issues were expansion of slavery into the territories, the South's declining political power, states rights, and the retention of slavery. Though these issues had existed for decades, they exploded in 1860 following the election of who was against the spread of slavery.
As the result of his election, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas seceded from the Union. Following the defeat at Bull Run, was given command of the new Union Army of the Potomac. In early 1862, he shifted south to attack Richmond via the Peninsula. Moving slowly, he was forced to retreat after the Seven Days Battles. This campaign saw the rise of Confederate.
After beating a Union army at, Lee began to move north into Maryland. McClellan was sent to intercept and won a victory at on the 17th. Unhappy with McClellan's slow pursuit of Lee, Lincoln gave command to. In December, Burnside was beaten at and replaced. The following May, Lee engaged and defeated Hooker at VA. In June 1863, Lee began to move north towards Pennsylvania with Union troops in pursuit.
Following the defeat at Chancellorsville, Lincoln turned to to take over the Army of the Potomac. On July 1, elements of the two armies clashed at Gettysburg, PA. After three days of heavy fighting, Lee was defeated and forced to retreat. A day later on July 4, Grant successfully concluded the, opening the Mississippi to shipping and cutting the South in two. Combined these victories were the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. In March 1864, Grant was given command of all Union armies and came east to deal with Lee.
Grant's campaign began in May, with the armies clashing at the. Despite heavy casualties, Grant pressed south, fighting at. Unable to get through Lee's army to Richmond, Grant attempted to cut the city off by taking. Lee arrived first and a siege began. On April 2/3, 1865, Lee was forced to evacuate the city and retreat west, allowing Grant to take Richmond. On April 9, to Grant at Appomattox Court House. The battles of the Civil War were fought across the United States from the East Coast to as far west as New Mexico.
Beginning in 1861, these battles made a permanent mark upon the landscape and elevated to prominence small towns that had previously been peaceful villages. As a result, names such as Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg became eternally entwined with images of sacrifice, bloodshed, and heroism.
It is estimated that over 10,000 battles of various sizes were fought during the Civil War as forces marched towards victory. During the Civil War, over 200,000 Americans were killed in.
